Uninsured motorists expected to rise in Mississippi

Mississippi Insurance Commissioner predicts rise in uninsured motorists

Writing ticket.jpgAs many in Mississippi struggle to make ends meet, some will decide to drop their automobile insurance coverage to save money despite the law requiring all individuals operating a vehicle in Mississippi to have liability insurance. According to the most recent figures, 28% of those people driving in Mississippi do not have automobile insurance. Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney expects that figure to rise to 30-31% in 2009.

If you are involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist, then you will need to make a claim against your own insurance company, assuming you have uninsured motorist coverage. If you don't have that coverage, then you should look at adding it to your policy.

The problem is that most people will get the mandatory insurance so they can get their car registered or get their driver's license, but some will then quit making payments on the insurance and it lapses. However, some of those people still have an insurance card showing that they have insurance even though the policy lapsed due to non-payment. Law enforcement officials say a pilot program would allow them to check a driver's proof of insurance in a traffic stop against insurance company databases. There was no word on when this pilot program would begin or how widespread it would be.

Airplane headed for Jackson Mississippi landed by passenger

Passenger lands plane headed for Jackson, Mississippi after pilot dies in air.

KingAir.jpgHere is one to strike fear in the hearts of those who fly in smaller planes. A family of four was leaving Florida in a twin-engine King Air enroute to Jackson, Mississippi and then on to Louisiana. As they were climbing out of their departure, the pilot had a heart attack. The father of the family took over the controls of the plane. Although he was a licensed pilot, his experience was limited to about 150 hours in a single-engine Cessna 172s. He had never flown the twin-engine King Air 200 they were in and he immediately contacted air traffic controllers for help.

The Air Traffic Controller called a friend who was a King Air pilot and the air traffic controller relayed instructions from his friend to the pilot in the air. According to the article, the pilot was able to land the plane safety in Tampa, Florida. Unfortunately, the pilot who suffered the heart attack did not survive. I imagine after this incident, the family might be flying commercial for a bit.

Toddlers in Pearl Mississippi rollover accident unharmed

Car seats save children from injury

In a story we usually don't see in Mississippi, two toddlers properly strapped in their child car seats were unharmed after the vehicle they were riding in flipped over during an accident in Pearl, Mississippi. According to the Pearl Police Department, a black Ford Ranger was traveling north on Pearson Road when a white Ford Expedition pulled into its path. The collision caused the Expedition to flip with the toddlers inside. Although the driver of the Expedition was transported to an area hospital, the two toddlers were unharmed.

Seat belts saves lives. As parents, we have the responsibility to ensure our children are properly belted when riding in vehicles. The parent of these toddlers did so and even though a tragic accident occurred, the toddlers were fine. We need more stories like this in Mississippi as opposed to those describing how some child was ejected from the vehicle during an accident or injured because they were not wearing a seatbelt.

Raptiva withdrawn from U.S. market

Manufacturer withdraws Raptiva in U.S.

p639raptiva.jpgThe FDA announced the withdraw of Raptiva (efalizaumab) from the U.S. market due to the risk of patients developing a progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a brain infection. There have been deaths associated with the long-term use of Raptiva. According to the FDA, PML is a serious, progressive neurologic disease caused by a virus that affects the central nervous systems. There is no known effective treatment or cure for PML. People who do survive with PML are severly disabled. Raptiva decreases the function of the immune system and increases the susceptibility to infections, including PML.

Raptiva was originally approved in October, 2003 for the treatment of moderate to severe plague psoriasis. It appears the risk of PML increases with the long term use of Raptiva. The FDA had required Genentech, Inc., the manufacturer of the Raptiva, to include a black box warning in October, 2008. For more information, click here for the FDA's statement on the withdraw of Raptiva from the U.S. market.

Rhino ATVs recalled by Yamaha due to rollover deaths

Yamaha recalling Rhinos due to rollover deaths

All Rhino 450, 660, and 700 model vehicles are being recalled for repairs after 46 deaths and hundreds of injuries due to rollovers. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, many of the rollovers occurred on level ground at relatively slow speeds.

Having witnessed first-hand these type of vehicles rollover in Mississippi, it is important that if you own one of the affected Rhino models, you return it to the dealer for repairs. You should also remember that these vehicles were intended to be used by persons with a drivers license and are not safe for children to operate. Too many times in Mississippi you see children operating these vehicles and I've never seen one child wearing a helmet while operating the vehicle. A rollover accident on one of these heavy vehicles can lead to serious injury or death.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured while operating or riding in a Rhino or similar type vehicle, call the Kisselburgh Law Firm at 601-936-4040 or contact us online to set up a free consultation to discuss your legal options.
